Event: Eastern Cape Artists Festivals
Date: 2002

In 2001 the Steve Biko Foundation together with Ginsberg Youth Council organized an arts and culture festival at the Ginsberg Community Hall to pay homage to the late founding father of black consciousness in South Africa , Bantu Steven Biko. The festival had two components to it. First, it looked at arts as a social practice and a means through which the community can express and assess itself. To this end the festival provided the community with an opportunity to conduct self analysis on issues pertinent to their development. Second, the festival enabled a dialogue between established and young artists. The outcome was the production of artifacts performances. The workshops were facilitated by Mthunzi and Nthabiseng of Artazi Arts Consultant, Ringo Madlingozi and Zwai Bala of Tkzee fame. The theatre workshops were facilitated by Cultural Reclamation Youth Movement under the leadership of playwright and artist, Mr. Gamakhulu Diniso.

The Ginsberg Trust Fund was established as a community resource to fund organizations and individuals who are interested in the arts, culture and heritage studies. The last day of the festival and workshops was graced by the presence of the Buffalo City Mayor CLR Maclean and a host of other dignitaries and guests.
