RE-BROADCAST: 20th ANNUAL STEVE BIKO MEMORIAL LECTURE BY REV. AL SHARPTON
Gauteng – The Founder and Executive Trustee of the Steve Biko Foundation, Mr. Nkosinathi Biko, and the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UNISA, Professor Mandla Makhanya, have expressed gratitude to viewers and technical teams for bearing through the technical challenges encountered during the earlier live broadcast of the 20th Annual Steve Biko Memorial Lecture.
Extensive unpublicised successful testing took place, linking numerous media houses with Reverend Sharpton in New York. These live interviews enabled Reverend Sharpton’s preliminary message to be spread by six media houses thus confirming the quality of the link for the live broadcast. Regrettably the quality of the sound for the scheduled main message was compromised during the Lecture broadcast and none of the platforms were able to obtain a clear feed.
Notwithstanding the interference encountered, both the Steve Biko Foundation and UNISA are determined that the passionate and inspirational message of Reverend Sharpton will be heard. Accordingly there will be a re-broadcast to which the office of Reverend Sharpton has tonight agreed and all the principal media partners have also agreed to re-broadcast. The complete Lecture will be offered to all media that carried it live, both electronic and online platforms.
Our patrons will be advised of the new date as part of the ongoing commemorative events marking the 43rd anniversary of the death in detention of Steve Biko.
We thank the many viewers who have called expressing their desire to hear the clear message of Reverend Sharpton. In spreading the message of #BlackLivesMatter we are inspired by Steve Biko’s own words: “To understand me correctly you would have to say that there are (were) no fears expressed”.
