Meet the Board of Trustees

The Steve Biko Foundation is governed by a five member Board of Trustees, comprised of the following individuals:

Mr. Ishmael Mkhabela 

Chairman

Mr. Ishmael Mkhabela, founded Interfaith Community Development Association and serves as its Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Mkhabela is a Co-facilitator, Organiser and Leader of Dinokeng Scenarios Public Engagement Programme.

He serves as the Chairperson of National Housing Board, Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO), Steve Biko Foundation, Central Johannesburg Partnership, Kabo Development Trust and Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.

He serves as Trustee of Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. He also serves as a Trustee of Finmark Trust, Jim Khazamula Trust, Donaldson Trust, Jade Africa and National Business Initiative (NBI).

He received SA Council of Churches Award for selfless contribution to the South African struggle for democracy.

Mr. Nkosinathi Biko/

Board Member

Mr. Nkosinathi Biko was born on the 11th of May 1971 in Port Elizabeth South Africa. He is the former Chief Executive Officer of the Steve Biko Foundation.

He is a founder member of the board of trustees and chaired the Steve Biko Foundation for the first five years.

He graduated from the University of Cape Town where he pursued a Bachelor of Social Science (Economics) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing Management.

Mr. Biko studied Property Development and Finance through the University of the Witwatersrand.

Mrs. Ntsiki Biko /

Board Member

Mrs. Ntsiki Biko was a member of the Black Consciousness Movement and was steadfast and courageous during some of apartheid’s most repressive years.

Today she works in King William’s Town running her own business while continuing the legacy of her husband as a trustee of the Steve Biko Foundation.

In her role there, Mrs. Biko focuses on leadership development along with the health and social development of local communities.

Prof. Ben Khoapa /

Board Member

Prof. Ben Khoapa is a former Vice Chancellor of Technikon Natal in Durban. Prof. Khoapa has a PhD in Social Welfare, an MSc in Social Administration and a BA in Sociology and Criminology.

He has served on numerous boards including the National Innovation Trust Fund, is a former member of the Certification Council for Technikon Education and has twice been Chair of the Committee of Technikon Principals.

He has worked as a consultant to the Department of Education and was the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Mergers and Transformation at the Durban Institute of Technology between 2002 and 2003.
